Metal Gear Solid 4 remained the top selling non-bundled game for this week, but it is dropping rather quickly after a stellar debut at over 500,000 units last week. Following closely was Wii Fit which topped a million units in lifetime sales this week. Hardware sales roughly paralleled those two games – the drop in Metal Gear Solid 4 was accompanied by a large drop in PS3 sales, while the increase in Wii Fit sales accompanied a large increase in Wii sales. All other hardware was relatively unchanged from last week, but down slightly. With the increased supply in Wii, Nintendo platforms outsold all others by a ratio greater than 3:2 for the week. In a small victory for Microsoft, Xbox 360 was able to outsell PS3 this week despite the recent launch of Metal Gear Solid 4.

Year over year trends continue to indicate that this year is trending to be the biggest ever for the videogame industry in the Americas. All hardware except for the ancient PS2 was up from this time a year ago. PS3 is up the most by percentage since it was only selling ~20,000 a week at this time last year, but Wii is up more by units (by over 75,000). DS and PSP are up 16% and 10% respectively compared to last year, while the Xbox 360 is up over 13% year over year although that amounts to only about 7,000 units. In the coming weeks comparisons should begin to looks even more favorable for Wii as production increases, while PS3 and Xbox 360 price cuts in 2007 will make it look as if both are losing momentum year over year. All of this is of course subject to change given the likelihood of an Xbox 360 price cut, and PS3 response in the coming weeks (E3) and/or months.
