Wii Sports Resort, the title destined to demonstrate the capabilities of the new Wii Motion Plus, was displayed on the Nintendo booth during this year´s E3. Here are my impressions.
The new compilation of Nintendo minigames includes 12 new sports that use the Wii Motion Plus, the new peripheral that is attached to the Wiimote and that helps us achieve two things: first, a 1:1 precission in real-time lag-free motion capture by the controler; and second, a 3D positional control of the remote with regards to the screen. Thus, the Wii will now be able to know where the controller is, in which position, and how it moves.
The Wii Motion Plus will come, of course, included with the game, and we were able to try it out on three of the mini-games: crossbow, sword-fight, and table tennis.
Wii Sports resort has basically the same graphic style as its predecesor, even if a bit more detailed in a few of the scenarios, but we still use the Miis as playing characters. Among the changes that most caught our attention was the dynamism of the presentation, when we parachute ourselves into the island where the events take place. During this sequence the game allows you to control the descent of your Mii, and simultaneously also kind of presents you with all the diverse reaction capabilities of the Wii Motion Plus
But let´s move on to the games we tried:
1- Bow and Arrow:
In this game you use the Nunchuck and the Wii Motion Plus. To target, we first have to direct the Wiimote, push the A button, and then simúlate the bow stretch with the Nunchaku while pressing Z, then releasing it to shoot. Thus, the targeting is very intuitive. Be cautioned, with the Wiimote detecting our movements with such precission, even the slightest twitch is reflected in our aiming on-screen.
Other complications in this game are provided by factors such as distance, wind, and moving targets. Before each shot you will have to account for them all. As in any sports games, your reflexes, precission, and proper accomodation of external factors combine to determine your score.
2- Ping Pong
This game detects very well our strikes and feels just as if we had an actual ping pong paddle in our hands. In this two-player game we started out with very straightforward exchanges, but as we progressed and bécame more accostumed to the Wii Motion Plus, the attacks became more sophisticated and entertaining, with effects and special moves that were increasingly difficult to counter by the opponent. Its, kind of risky to attempt these special effect shots, or the marginal placement of attacks in the rival´s field, but they were much more satisfying than the standard exchanges.
3- Sword Games
The Sword duel has several specific modalities, and the one we tried out with Brett was heavily reliant on reaction speed for victory, since we had to cut in half random objects thrown our way. The direction and position of our cut always mattered although there was some tolerance in that respect. It´s a tremendously simple mini-game, but enormously entertaining.
A fun fact worth mentioning was that when both players make the right movement at virtually the same moment the referee pauses for a moment as if pondering who might be the winner, adding a photo-ending feel to the game and increasing the satisfaction for the winner.
Wii Sports Resort carbón copies the successful philosophy of its predecesor. It´s an ideal title to enjoy with friends and to entertain visitors. It´s also a very appropiate game to enjoy with the whole family and a most efficient way to become familiarized with the new Wii Motion Plus.
