NewsDr Kawashima’s Brain Training - best selling game ever in the UKBy Brett Walton 06th Jul 2009
From Casualgaming.biz: ELSPA GfK-ChartTrack have released their half year 2009 charts showing that casual titles have dominated at UK retailers so far this year. Topping the list is Nintendo’s Wii Fit, Wii Play and Mario Kart Wii which combined represent total sales of 1.65m in just 2009 (75 per cent of the top five’s total sales). Dr Kawashima's Brain Training came in at 7th with total sales passing the 3 million mark and making it the most successful game of all time in the UK.
Other casual titles doing well in the listing were Nintendo’s Professor Layton and the Curious Village coming in fourth and Sega’s Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games in tenth (now in its third year of release). ELSPA director general Michael Rawlinson commented on the figures: “These figures are clear evidence that gaming is now mainstream in the UK. The demographic has changed, so it’s time we did away with the misperception that videogames are merely the preserve of teenage boys shooting zombies. Innovation in the industry means the social and educational benefits of gaming are now enjoyed by players of both sexes and of all ages.” |
