NewsToday, a new video game sales & tracking service, FADE LLC (Forecasting and Analyzing Digital Entertainment) has released their first publically available data for the iPhone market, with a top 10 list, and the claim that they offer a whole lot more. Up to this point, iPhone sales data has been sketchy at best. We’ve seen roughly a half dozen press releases from companies reaching sales milestones. But with over 65,000 applications available, just how well is the market doing? According to FADE, it’s doing quite well, as we would expect. According to FADE’s most recent report for the month ending July, 2009, we found the following key points:
What are the Top 10 titles on the iPhone for all time? The question can be answered 2 ways, according to FADE. Depending if revenue or units sold are the sorted metric, it can greatly impact the list according to our contact at FADE. For this release, they provided us with the top 10 games according to units sold.
Also included in the release are 2 distinct charts. The first one is a chart displaying average revenue among all iPhone games by price point. It serves as an interesting counterclaim to most arguments concerning the deflation of the iPhone market pricing. One note from our discussion with FADE: Although revenue trends strongly upwards, and peaks at the $5.99 price point, it may be correlated with the types of games at such a price point: There are just 20 titles currently at the $5.99 price point, and include such titles as Super Monkey Ball, Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 3D, Rolando, Myst, and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. Comparatively, the 99 cent price point has over 5,000 titles.

The second chart shows the percentage of titles selling within a certain revenue range. What’s interesting is the general trend toward higher profits for games in above the 99 cent range. According to our contacts at FADE, it would seem that many developers are unable get their title to reach the often-quoted success stories of 99 cent giants such as Flight Control, Pocket God, or Tap Tap Revenge due to the high number of games in competition at this price point.
