So, as most of you know VGChartz was present at the Eurogamer Expo in London this weekend. I was one of the lucky people to be there able to play a bunch of new and upcoming games. What game was top of my list on arrival? God of War 3.
It was the same demo that was at E3 earlier this year, so i had an idea of what was in store for me as i finally picked up the Sixaxis after waiting in line for what seemed like an eternity.
The demo itself starts off showing you the wartorn skyline filled with dark smoke and destruction, Kratos is looking as angry as ever staring into the camera. The camera then pulls out and the transition from the start screen to gameplay is perfect. You get into the action right away with a bunch of Skeleton Warriors running straight at you.
This is where the fluid gameplay of God of War comes into action. I had no problems with learning the controls, the game just felt natural to me and was pretty easy to get to grips with. It keeps the traditonal God of War style in which it is mainly a hack n slash game, but adds a bunch of cool new stuff like the ability to ride and control a Cyclops that attacks you towards the end of the demo.
The QTE events in the game were quite easy to hit, i only missed a couple through my 2 playthroughs, both of which got me either impaled or chewed on... But hey, it looked really cool so it felt kinda okay to miss a few. My favourite QTE's were obviously scripted around killing various monsters, and Helios himself. I wont go into too detail of what happens with these kills, il just leave you with the thought of horns, heads, eyes, guts and "ripping".
I felt the platforming element of the demo was the only flaw. It felt sluggish, clunky and like a last gen game. Which was surprising, considering how fluid the game had been up to that point. Im sure later in the game the platforming will be better, but in the demo it was just so... Boring. Not much else i can really say on this part. But it did lead up to one of the coolest and most goriest things i have ever seen in a game.
The graphics in God of War 3 look to be pretty damn good aswell, to say the least. The textures look amazing, as do the character models and locations. There was no screen-tear as far as i noticed and there was a steady frame rate throughout the entire demo. Really impressive, considering how old the build is. One can only imagine how detailed the game will be when it releases next year.
The demo itself ends with Kratos using the Icarus wings to fly up a vent at high speed, dodging several different obstacles and flaming boulders. When he finally gets to the top you lose control of gameplay and we get a mouth watering conclusion with Kratos flying towards the Lava Titan, Chain Blades in hand, getting ready for what seems to be yet another epic battle.
Overall I have to say I loved it. The platforming was the only thing in my opinion that let the demo down, but it was hardly a massive problem when stacked against the fluid and fun gameplay during fighting. God of War 3 will without doubt be an epic conclusion to the much loved Sony Santa Monica Series.
The game will be releasing March 2010 exclusively on PlayStation 3.
