After a period of stagnation by the new mobile OS, sales saw a strong jump from the September period on the heels of the new Android 1.6 'Donut' update. The update included multiple marketplace revisions which allowed for easier navigation, pictures inside of product discriptions, and defaulting to paid applications. Also during the month, Sprint launched the new HTC Hero handset which is the first Android handset for the CDMA-based carrier. Both additions allowed the Android gaming marketplace to rise 53% in estimated gross revenue from the month prior. Such a change is very indicative of the improvements, as September actually saw reduced revenues from August by an estimated 5%. For comparison, we present the following sales chart demonstrating a change in the sales curve among tracked titles:
The key metric via this image is the higher revenue trendline among all titles during the October cycle. Top 20 games in October accumulated a similar amount of revenue as all 175 tracked titles in September, highlighting both the frontloadedness of the Android market as well as the improvement of sales in October. Key Dates During Month
Top 10 Games for October, 2009:
Forecast: Despite sluggish sales during the first 7 months of paid game downloads totalling an estimated $850,000 USD in revenue through September, we believe that the AndroidOS is poised for strong Q4 growth. Increases in October were driven both by Android 1.6 and new phones to the marketplace. With multiple new Android handsets slated for November, we believe strong sales will grow the market for games on this platform. We believe that November will see strong growth to $270,000 USD or a 50% increase over October. 2009 should end on a very high note as Android handsets continue to roll out on a more consistent release cycle than seen up to October. As consumers look to upgrade handsets during the holiday season, we believe that the Android OS will see approximately $1.75 million USD in revenue by years end among all tracked titles. Methodology: Android sales volume is estimated based on download ranges provided by the Android marketplace, user ratings on products, FADE polls by Android users, and other proprietary means.
